How to Translate a Birth Certificate for USCIS

A birth certificate is the most fundamental document required for family-based visas, green cards, and adjustment of status applications. If your birth certificate was issued in a language other than English, you must submit a certified translation to USCIS. This step-by-step guide explains how to prepare this document for successful acceptance.

The Complete Translation Requirement

USCIS requires a full, word-for-word translation of the birth certificate. This means every piece of text on the document must be translated into English, including the names of the parents, the registration number, the date and place of birth, the issuing authority, and all official stamps, seals, barcodes, and signatures. If there is a stamp or hand-written signature that is illegible, the translator must write '[illegible]' in its place. Skipping any section will lead to an RFE.

Transliteration and Name Spelling Accuracy

A frequent issue in birth certificate translations is the spelling of names. Translators must ensure that the names of the applicant, parents, and cities are transliterated correctly. The spelling of the applicant's name in the translated birth certificate must match the spelling in their passport and official immigration forms exactly. Even a single letter difference (such as 'Mariana' vs 'Maryana') can trigger security flags, identity questions, or application processing delays.

Document Scans and Certification Delivery

When submitting your translation request, take a clear, high-resolution photo or scan of the front and back of the birth certificate. The translator will use this file to generate the English version. Once complete, they will deliver a packet containing the English translation, a copy of the original birth certificate, and the signed Certification Statement. You must submit these files together as a single PDF or packet during your online or paper-based USCIS application process.
